| Art Room/Davis - The Davis art teacher is assisted by parent
volunteers. All volunteers are organized by the coordinator who publishes a
monthly calendar for the volunteers.
Bedford School Association – Represents BEST at the BSA grant meetings.
Bedford Youth and Family Services – Liaison to Youth and Family
Services.
Boston/Bedford Connection – This committee holds 2
pot-luck dinners per year to bring METCO families and Bedford families together.
Box Top Coordinator - This coordinator collects box tops for General
Mills’ "Boxtops for Education" program, organizes them, and submits
them for funds.
Community Service - Community Service was established in 2003/2004
to give students and their families an opportunity to participate in projects
that provide goods or services to Bedford or other local communities.
Davis Cafeteria – This person solicits volunteers for the daily
lunchroom monitors, provides overview/training, and coordinates, develops and
publishes the volunteer schedule.
Enrichment - The Enrichment Committee schedules performances that
complement the science and technology curricula as well as the arts. The
committee members preview performances to ensure their quality and age
appropriateness. They also coordinate and host performers.
Performances are distributed equally among the 6 grades represented
at the Davis and Lane schools. In addition, the Enrichment Grant Writers
write grants to secure funding to support the Enrichment programs.
Events - The Events Committee plans special community events
(typically one fall and one spring) and coordinates volunteers for family
nights. Their purpose is to bring the elementary schools community
together to have fun!
Fifth Grade – This person coordinates volunteers for the fifth grade
activities including the clothing drive, talent show and year-end celebration.
Fundraising - The Fundraising Committee coordinates the annual
wrapping paper drive that funds 50% of the entire BEST operating budget each
year.
Gardens - The Garden Committee coordinates volunteers for fall, spring
and summer projects. They maintain existing plantings at both the Davis
and Lane schools and plan new planting projects as well.
Good Cheer – This committee coordinates the sending of a small
item/card to bring Good Cheer to children, BEST families, or school staff facing
medical or other difficult problems.
Greeters – The greeters coordinate volunteers to greet children being
dropped for school in the mornings to facilitate traffic flow and promote
safety.
Hospitality - Hospitality coordinates refreshments for school
staff activities. The committee solicits refreshments from BEST
families and provides them for activities like the Welcome Back
Luncheon in September, The Holiday Brunch in December, Early Release Day
Lunches and Celebration of School Support Staff.
Library - Davis and Lane Coordinators organize monthly volunteers, book
fair volunteers and occasional projects in libraries. The two coordinators per
school also publish a monthly calendar of volunteers scheduled to help in the
libraries.
Newcomers Welcome - This committee coordinates several coffees and
playground activities to provide families who are new to the area with an
opportunity to meet other families.
Newsletter - The Newsletter Committee produces the BEST/PTO monthly
newsletter. The monthly production cycle includes drafts, editing, copying
and distribution to over 500 families. The chairperson works with officers and
committee chairs, coordinators and representatives for input.
Parent Advisory Council – Participates in council for parents of
children with special needs and provides communication to BEST through
newsletter.
Publicity and Marketing - This committee produces and provides
flyers, displays, newspaper communication and newsletter offerings in support of
BEST activities. School lobby bulletin boards are also decorated for the season
and maintained to display flyers, programs and thank you notes.
Room Parents - One coordinator per school to organize Room Parents and
assign them in the fall.
Sponsor-a-Class – This person coordinates corporate and family
fundraising to directly benefit the teachers and their classrooms.
Student Directory - This committee produces, sells and
distributes student directories to the BEST community. The directory is an
invaluable resource for families, providing a classroom roster with family
names, addresses and phone numbers for all Davis and Lane classrooms.
Resource pages are also listed for the benefit of elementary families.
Transportation Safety Council – Participates as a parent representative
on the Transportation Safety Committee.Volunteer Coordinator
- Consolidates all volunteers in fall
volunteer package and distributes to committees and officers. Serves as a
contact for a variety of BEST volunteer projects throughout year.
Webmaster - This person is responsible for keep all BEST information
on the website current.
World Languages - Coordinators organize volunteer instructors and
students in before-school world languages classes at Davis School.
